Well known for some of the world's premier equestrian facilities and horse farms, the Village of Wellington is also known for it's agriculture, nurseries, golfing and fantastic family lifestyle abundant with activities.
History In 1951 Charles Oliver Wellington purchased investment property in South Florida based on the recommendation of Arthur William Glisson (Bink Glisson). Shortly after the purchase the Acme Drainage District was formed by the state of Florida.
Bink Glisson was hired by C.O. Wellington to oversee the property that became known as Flying Cow Ranch. Bink served the district for many years and retired in Wellington in 1993.
Major construction did not begin until 1971 after 7,400 acres was sold to the Investment Corporation of Florida. They began a joint venture with Alcoa Aluminum to build hundreds of homes. Eventually some of the land was sold to Gould Florida. The Chairman of Gould, William Yilvisaker, was an avid polo player. Palm Beach Polo and Country Club was a result.
Gould pulled out in 1985 and sold it's remaining acreage to Corepoint who was succeeded by Lennar Homes. Glenn Straub purchased the Palm Beach Polo and Country Club from the Resolution Trust Company in 1993.
The Village of Wellington was officially born December 31, 1995 after years of trying by a few determined residents.
Today the village is very diverse with golf courses, polo grounds, apartments, town homes, estate homes on acreage and even a landing strip at the Aero Club where residents have airplane hangars attached to their homes.
